Dolled-up makeup

There are two main makeup looks Barbie is renowned for. One is that of the original 1950’s Barbie, very classic pin-up look and the second is that of the most commonly known 1990’s Malibu Barbie, ice-cream coloured eyes and bubble gum pink lips. But one thing that both Barbies have in common is that of a flawless complexion and well defined features. Over the next couple of days I will blog about my makeup collection where I will rate products but in this blog I will focus on makeup application.

Complexion

Me demonstating contouring
Skin needs to look as smooth as possible; the best way to achieve this is exfoliating skin gently and applying an oil-free hydrating moisturizer ten minutes prior to foundation application. I always recommend a primer first to absorb any access oil produced throughout the day and fill in pores and fine lines.  The next thing to apply is a semi-matte foundation in the same shade as you natural skin colour (or if you wear fake tan the same shade as that) blending it evenly over the whole face.  I recommend using a foundation brush for this as it gives a nice air-brushed finish. Barbie has a very slim face, high cheek bones and a small nose, good contouring will help create this optical illusion on your own face. In order to fake this you need to use foundation three shades darker and blend it into the areas the sun would naturally hit the face: the hollows of the cheeks, the temples, around the jaw line and either side of the bridge of the nose.
Then take a liquid highlighter and place it in the opposite areas to which you have darkened; cheek bones, cupids bow and bridge of the nose.  Barbie’s skin is virtually flawless, so concealer is the next step. Apply concealer around the eyes, nostrils and on the chin (anywhere else you are prone to redness.)   If you want a really defined cheek bones I would recommend placing a little bronzer in to the hollows of the cheeks and drawing it up towards the hairline in a diagonal angle. Place a cherry pink blusher on the apples of the cheeks and set the makeup with a loose translucent powder. Your barbie-inspired complexion is complete.

For this you will need a black kohl pencil and liquid liner. Line the inside of the upper lid and the outside of the bottom lid with the black kohl, I recommend setting this with a black powder shadow. To create Barbies wide eyes I advise placing a white kohl pencil in the waterline, this gives the illusion of bigger eyes. With your liquid liner trace the shape of your eye with a line in a medium thickness and wing it 3mm at the corners. Finish by curling your lashes and putting on two coats of mascara, followed by your fake lashes. A strong red lip completes the look.

This is all about candy colours on the eyes, cheeks and lips. For the eyes the sockets need to be well defined. Purple and lilac are my favourite colours to be used on the eyes. Place an opal white all over the eyes. Pack a taupe shade of brown in to the sockets and blend well up towards the brow bone following with the lilac on the lid. The key to making the look wearable is blending. Line the eyes as before and take a little of your brown and place it on the corners of the bottoms of your eye, smoking it out. Take the white you used to cover the eyes and place it close to the inside corners of the eyes to open them up. For the lips you need a bright bubble-gum pink lipstick and layer it with copious amounts of a matching gloss to create a plump lacquered Barbie pout.
